Boavista Golfe splendor in the Algarve ...
Boavista Golf hosted the inaugural round of the prestigious Sir Henry Cooper / Mike Reid Charity Golf Classic on 17th May. A field of 88 golfers including 22 celebrities from the UK took part in the event which was held in perfect Algarvian conditions
Apart from Sir Henry and Mike themselves, other celebrities included old favourites Jimmy Tarbuck, Stan Boardman, Kenny Lynch, John Virgo, Dave Jessup, Rocky Taylor, Gareth Hunt and Berni Flint plus first timers Nigel Mansell, Tim Healy, Steve Wicks and Kevin Whateley. The winning team for the Boavista leg were the appropriately named Truecare Group led by celebrity Stan Boardman and it was Stan who led the post golf entertainment at the club house enjoyed by all.
One of the nicest aspects of the way in which this tournament has developed at Boavista is that the club members contribute greatly towards the success of the day. An aspect which was not lost on either Sir Henry or Mike, who both thanked all concerned, picking out the members for special mention.
After further rounds of the tournament at Palmares and Penina it was Nigel Mansell’s Penina team who emerged victorious with 240 points, with Stan Boardman’s Truecare team in runners up position with 238 points. There was some compensation for Stan who turned in the best celebrity score of 105 to take the individual title from Dave Jessup on 99.
As usual, the event will be shown on all three Sky Sports channels at varying times on Monday 14th and Tuesday 15th June. As the times are likely to vary it would be advisable to check near to the date
